Here at About Our Kids (AOK), we love teaching the young people of Barton County how to make positive life choices. Our mission is to help youth become well-rounded and community-spirited through our various in-school, after school and summer programs which are open to all children from kindergarten through eighth grade.
We are fortunate to work with various local schools to teach our youth how to avoid risky behavior, deal with bullies and the importance of nutrition and exercise.
After School Programs
Children from kindergarten through fifth grade are bused from Lamar R-1 Schools to the Wolf Building where they get a nutritious snack, help with homework, then games, group reading and outdoor play. Youth in sixth through eighth grades (VolunTeens) meet at Nathan’s Place for snacks, help with homework, fun physical activities and community service learning projects. Both locations serve a hot, balanced supper to all interested.
When school is out for the summer, children from kindergarten to eighth grade are offered a full schedule of age-appropriate activities, including swimming, going to movies, fishing, doing service projects, cooking, and many others. Of course, nutritious meals and snacks are served daily.
School Cancellation Activities
Schools have been closed several days lately due to snowy, cold weather. AOK offers a safe place for children to go during the day when school is not in session. The Wolf Building is open from 7:30 am- 5:30 pm and Nathan’s Place is open from 9 am-6 pm. Breakfast is served at the Wolf Building between 7:30 and 9:00 am and then AOK staff deliver the VolunTeens to Nathan’s Place. Then the kids at both locations enjoy the day with AOK’s experienced staff members and, of course, snacks and meals.
Despite recent rumors, AOK is not closing. We will be continuing our great programs all throughout 2014 and beyond. We had a great time in 2013, and we cannot wait to see what the new year has in store for our kids and our community.
