Camper of the Month
Drake McElroy
Drake is 9 years old and attends West Elementary. Eating at Mother Tuckers and spending time with family are some of his favorite things to do. Some of his other favorites are the color red, the movie “Greater” and the song “God’s Country.” His future plans are going to school and becoming an AOK staff member. All of us at AOK want to thank Drake for his positive behavior and his hard work.
NATHAN’S PLACE
National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week
National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week®, or NDAFW, is an annual, week-long, health observance that inspires dialogue about the science of drug use and addiction among youth. It provides an opportunity to bring together scientists, students, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners to help advance the science, so that we can improve prevention and awareness of substance misuse in our own communities. It was launched in 2010 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to stimulate educational events in communities so teens can learn what science has taught us about drug use and addiction. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism became a partner in 2016, and alcohol has been added as a topic area for the week. NIDA and NIAAA are part of the National Institutes of Health.
To honor National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, the VolunTeens will be putting the knowledge learned over the past few months regarding alcohol and substance abuse to the test by participating in an interactive quiz. But don’t worry! There will be awesome prizes for all to win, including a grand prize! They will also be creating their own “I want to SHATTER THE MYTHS because…” posters to explain why they feel staying drug and alcohol-free is important for them.
Food of the Month
Peanuts
Peanuts are a convenient source of protein and come with the bonus of healthful nutrients, such as antioxidants, iron, magnesium, and fiber. Most fats in peanuts are heart-healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats, which can help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol.
This week the VolunTeens will be making Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Granola. Granola is the perfect topping to spice up yogurt or smoothie and is also a great healthy on-the-go snack to enjoy.
