Nutritional Awareness
Energy drinks are widely promoted as products that increase energy and enhance mental alertness and physical performance. Next to multivitamins, energy drinks are the most popular dietary supplement consumed by American teen. A growing body of scientific evidence shows that energy drinks can have serious health effects, particularly in children and teenagers. Large amounts of caffeine may cause serious heart and blood vessel problems such as heart rhythm disturbances and increases in heart rate and blood pressure. Caffeine also may harm children’s still-developing cardiovascular and nervous systems. Excessive energy drink consumption may disrupt teens’ sleep patterns and may be associated with increased risk-taking behavior.
This week, the VolunTeen’s will be learning about the harms of energy drinks by performing science experiments that show them the high sugar contents of these drinks as well as the adverse effect that energy drinks have when paired with some everyday food and drinks.
Food of the Month
Peanuts
Peanuts are a convenient source of protein and come with the bonus of healthful nutrients, such as antioxidants, iron, magnesium, and fiber. Most fats in peanuts are heart-healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats, which can help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol.
This week the VolunTeen’s will be making Monster Cookie Energy Balls. This easy to make snack is the perfect healthy way to get that extra boost of energy.
